Breast reduction surgery

Hypertrophy of the breast means increase in breast size. The breast is too large, hence too heavy in comparison with the patient’s overall physical build. Breast Reduction Surgery performed by Dr. Bernier is a procedure that relieves women with large breasts from the physical or psychological discomfort caused by the hypertrophy of the breast.
The surgery repositions both the nipple and the areola so that the breast will be normal in size and shape and regain firmness.

The type of incisions made determines the amount of excess skin and breast tissue to be removed.
Sutures closing the incision enable the breast to regain its natural and well-proportioned contour.
The technique used depends on the amount of excess skin to remove. The preferred technique is the anchor-shaped incision (around the areola, vertical and horizontal). In this procedure, the skin is detached from the mammary gland and the excess skin removed. The mammary gland is then attached to the pectoral muscle with permanent sutures, following which the nipple and areola are repositioned. Breast Reduction is performed under general anaesthesia and the surgery is done in approximately 4 hours. Convalescence takes about 2 weeks.
Usually, scars are hardly visible after one year.
