There are various treatments available to improve the texture of your skin. Whether to minimize the appearance of wrinkles, improve the tone of the skin, or restore its youthful glow, there is no shortage of options. One of these is microneedling, a very promising method that is a fairly recent development. This non-invasive age-defying treatment stimulates every layer of the skin, helping to improve its overall texture.
If you’re looking for a highly effective way to beautify your skin, this method just might be the ideal solution for you!
What is microneedling?
This technique works by stimulating the fibroblasts—the cells responsible for the quality of the skin. The technician performs the treatment using an electric pen equipped with single-use microneedles, which come in various thicknesses. The device creates tiny perforations in the area under treatment. It works at variable speeds and penetrates different layers of the dermis.
The goal is to stimulate the production of elastin and collagen. The newly produced fibers will then restore density to the skin, improving its texture.
No downtime is necessary after the treatment. However, slight reddening of the skin is common once the session is over. In general, this redness will disappear within 24 to 48 hours. During this period, the use of makeup is inadvisable.
What skin conditions can microneedling treat?
You should be aware that, unlike Botox injections, for example, this treatment isn’t designed to get rid of wrinkles. However, by improving the quality and tone of the skin, it is effective at preventing the onset of wrinkles.
Here are some of the skin problems that microneedling can treat:
- Dull or muddled complexion
- Creased skin
- Stretch marks (old or recent)
- Fine lines
- Large pores
- Sagging skin on the face or body
Are there any contraindications?
While microneedling is suitable for all types and colors of skin, there are some contraindications to the treatment. Therefore, if you’re pregnant, if you suffer from acne or herpes or if you’re currently taking anticoagulants, you’re better off avoiding this procedure.
What can the patient expect before, during and after the treatment?
Before the treatment, the patient must remove all makeup and thoroughly disinfect the skin. The technician will then use the device to make several passes over the area under treatment, penetrating the skin at different depths in order to access each layer of the dermis. The micro-perforations made by the needles trigger the healing process, renewing the skin at the cellular level and stimulating the production of elastin and collagen. By promoting blood circulation, the treatment ensures better oxygenation of the skin.
After the treatment, it’s normal for the skin to have a slightly rosy appearance. There may also be some light bleeding. The procedure isn’t generally painful; however, the patient may experience mild discomfort in some cases, especially if the treatment is performed on the deeper layers of the dermis. To ensure a maximum level of comfort, the technician will frequently apply an anesthetic cream prior to initiating the treatment.
