Sun damage, otherwise known as photodamage, is a universal problem that can affect any skin type at any age. When the effects of UV start to take-hold, the skin can turn from even in color, smooth and soft, to spotted, rough and loose. Treating photodamage in its earliest stages will help patients avoid the more severe types of aging-signs such as: pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions.

Spotless Skin & Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy

Dr. Mario F. Bernier uses IPL technology to erase sunspots and to correct uneven tone.

The first step will be preparing the skin 4 to 6 weeks prior the treatment. This process is essential to optimize safety, and outcome of procedures. To stabilize melanocytes (cells that form melanin), and shields the skin from future damages, patients uses medical grade creams with bleaching agents such as: Hydroquinone, vitamin C, Arbutin, Kojic Acid…

For long-term age-spots fading, intense pulsed light treatment can lighten the skin. The IPL device uses an optimized light hand piece to deliver energy into skin and targeting pigmented lesions, which slowly disappear as the body’s natural healing progresses. Hydrafacial™ treatment is recommended 5 days after the procedure, to exfoliate and remove dead cells. It will leave the skin brighter, smoother and spotless.

Depending upon the treatment parameters, the patient can expect to experience a temporary redness, warmth, and swelling, which typically lasts only two days.

Preventing photo damage

  • Avoid tanning: Leads to DNA damage and can have major consequences over time.
  • Sunscreen applications: apply sunscreen at least once every two hours, to defend the integrity of your skin.
  • Avoid sun exposure : Wear protective clothing (sun glasses, hats, long pants & sleeves) UVA are more dangerous between 10AM and 4PM.
  • Norrish your skin : Load your skin with antiox to provide DNA protection.
