Fractional laser- age-reversing innovations
One of the first age-related changes showing up on the skin is the appearing of fine lines and wrinkles, which if not treated, will progress over time. Fractional laser treatments are the most popular procedure performed by plastic surgeons and dermatologists all over the world, to improve skin texture, erase wrinkles, diminish appearance of scars and acne scars.
20 years ago, the older version of CO2 laser skin resurfacing, would vaporize the epidermis. A number of side-effects such as: infections, prolonged erythema and pain, contributed to the decline of this treatment method.
Today, fractional lasers are less invasive and they do not require nearly as much downtime. After as few as 4 to 6 treatments, the results are remarkable. Different kinds of laser treatments have arrived in the field. There are two main types of laser resurfacing techniques: ablative and non-ablative. Both use the power of lasers at a specific wavelength to improve quality of the skin.
Beautiful skin is what we want and what we deserve. Laser skin resurfacing treats undesirable skin imperfections on your face and body. Fractional laser skin resurfacing can quickly and easily improve a number of skin flaws, without surgery or lengthy recovery time.
Dr. Mario F. Bernier, board certified plastic surgeon, will elaborate a personalized treatment plan, after establishing a diagnosis and classifying the patient’s skin. The first step will be preparing the skin. This process is essential to optimize safety, and outcome of procedures. Combining a series of 2 to 3 treatments at least 6 weeks apart with different types of actions, (non-ablative and ablative) will maximize ultimate results.
Different lasers are used to target different concerns
Fractional CO2 laser in micro-ablative mode
The fractional CO2 laser in micro ablative mode penetrates deep into the skin, affecting the layer below the epidermis, called the dermis. The device emits columns of laser energy, and once exposed to tissue, it coagulates and initiates the natural healing process and generates new collagen production. These lasers are best for retexturing the skin and smoothing out fine lines, wrinkles and enlarged pores. The parameters in a deeper mode will work best to treat scars and acne scars. Because the laser beam penetrates to a deeper level, the coagulative necrosis will be increased in the dermis.
The non-ablative laser is gentler than ablative options, but not pain-free. For patient’s comfort, we apply topical anesthesia one hour before the procedure to numb the skin.
Depending upon the treatment parameters, the patient can expect to experience a temporary redness, warmth, and swelling, which typically lasts only two days. Usually patients may return to their normal activities the same day following the procedure.
Longer Pulse duration for increased Thermal effect and tightening
Stack pulses for greater depth of treatment will better work on: Deep wrinkles and acne scars
CO2 laser treatment in standard ablative mode
Ablative lasers use the same technology as micro-ablative, but instead of “burning” micro-columns in the dermis, the superlong wavelength creates a complete ablation into the epidermis and partially in the dermis. This process will create synthesis of collagen and fibroblast proliferation.
This treatment is ideal for extreme sun damage, texture issues, deep and more stubborn lines around eyes, mouth and face.
The ablative laser goes deeper into the skin to repair the damage; it also takes longer to heal. The recovery usually takes 7 to 10 days. Skin will be extremely red and swollen. Skin is also exposed; and to create a protective barrier, an ointment application will be recommended.
Usually the ablative CO2 laser treatment is the final treatment that follows the other micro-ablative CO2 laser sessions. A simple CO2 ablative laser treatment can diminish or completely erase the appearance of the deepest lines. Skin will be tighter and brighter and wrinkles will be considerably less apparent.
CO2 laser treatment in standard ablative mode needs more downtime.
Usually, only one treatment will be needed, but for mature skin a second treatment may be needed at least 3 months after the first one.
For lasting results, it’s important that patients protect their skin from the sun and take care of it with the use of a medical grade topical ointment. Nothing lasts forever and one or two treatment per year will help to maintain long lasting.
