FACIAL REJUVENATION BY INJECTION… Restoring
a youthful expression |
On average the human body stops
growing by the age of 25. Once full maturity is achieved, a downhill
journey known as ageing begins. A small wrinkle here, a small
crease there, thinning lips and sunken cheeks ... No need for
cosmetic surgery at this stage, but there are easy interventions
that succeed very well in hiding the initial signs of ageing. These
minor “youthful corrections” can erase and soften
wrinkles or flesh up and tone certain parts of the face in a subtle
and natural way.

 Dr.
Bernier offers a range of injections to augment lips, correct
the nasolabial folds (D), horizontal forehead wrinkles (A), glabellar
folds (B), lip juncture folds, (E), crow’s feet (C), acne
scars, local depressions, sunken lower eyelids, etc. |
| The
long-lasting injectable implant … Looking
young in the face of time |

Long-lasting injectable implants are prescribed for the treatment
of dermatological augmentation, the correction of wrinkles and
other depressions of the skin. The long-lasting injectable implant consists of very smooth microspheres of PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) with a variable controlled diameter of 32 to 40 microns, in suspension in a bovine collagen solution.
PMMA is a product that has been used in the human body since early 1930's for common practice such as prosthetics denture, contac lenses, bone repair and manufacturing orthopaedic appliances as well as cardiaque pacemakers.
Injectable products made with PMMA require a cutaneous test beforehand.
Long-lasting injectable implants use the body’s
natural ability to encapsulate foreign bodies by producing conjunctive
tissue (collagen) that wraps itself around the micro-spheres
or the fragments. This encapsulation process takes about 3 months.
Depending on the patient and the corrective
work done, a second or third injection may be necessary if results
are not obtained after the first. According to studies, unlike
the effect of collagen which lasts from three to six months,
long-lasting implants can last five years or more. Over time,
however, the cosmetic effect of the implant can become less
noticeable as new wrinkles are formed.

| INJECTION
OF HYALURONIC ACID … New wave
in anti-wrinkle results |
The injection of hyaluronic acid is an immediate
and effective solution to erase wrinkles and fine lines or to
increase the volume of the lips.
Just like collagen, hyaluronic acid is one of
the components of our skin which gives it its young and healthy
appearance. The hyaluronic acid is injected under the skin in
the form of clear gel; the treatment takes on average 30 minutes.

Contrary to bovine collagen
injections or other type of injections, the hyaluronic acid used
at Dr. Bernier’s clinic is not extracted from animal tissue.
This eliminates the need for an allergy test beforehand. The results
of a hyaluronic acid injection will last 6 to 12 months, on average,
before another injection is needed. The actual duration is dependent
on many factors: the patient’s age, lifestyle and skin structure.

| BOTULINUM
TOXIN (BOTOX) … Latest line
in wrinkle disappearance |
Botulinum toxin makes it possible to decrease the contraction
activity of the muscle involved in the formation of wrinkles,
and slow down the process by which permanent wrinkles are formed.
This treatment is effective for glabellar or frown lines, forehead
wrinkles (brow lift), crow’s feet and nasal crease wrinkles.
FOR TREATING FOREHEAD WRINKLES
… THE FOREHEAD MUSCLES ARE INJECTED

FOR TREATING CROW’S FEET…
THE OCULAR MUSCLES ARE INJECTED

FOR TREATING WRINKLES BETWEEN EYEBROWS…
THE CORRUGATOR AND PROCERUS MUSCLES ARE INJECTED

Botulinum toxin is a synthetic
substance originating with a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum
and purified under strictly controlled conditions.
The botulinum toxin injection blocks neuromuscular
conduction and causes a flaccid paralysis by attaching itself
to the receptor sites in motor nerve endings, penetrating the
nerve ending and inhibiting the release of acetylcholine.

The intramuscular injection of
botulinum toxin in therapeutic dosages produces a localised muscular
paralysis.
The intervention takes only 15 minutes and
the effects of the botulinum toxin are normally visible within
72 hours. The maximum result is generally achieved in 7 to 14
days. The effectiveness of an injection is estimated to be between
4 and 6 months. Two annual injections are usually recommended
to keep the muscles dormant.

THE FATTY GRAFT... Filling out
in all the right places
Injection of fatty tissue |
The
fatty graft, also known as fatty injection, is a procedure that
consists of using liposuction to remove a quantity of fatty
tissue from a specific body location (donor site) and injecting
it into a receiver site. This technique is an alternative to
reabsorbing injections. The fatty tissue injection causes neither
allergy, nor rejection since it consists of the person’s
own fatty tissue. Studies show that 20 to 30 % of the fatty
cells injected at the desired place will survive permanently.
The donor site is usually on the thighs or abdomen.
The fatty tissue taken is then injected into the receiver site.
Facial areas that respond best to fatty grafts are: lips, the
nasal folds (frown lines) and labial junctions (laugh lines).
The procedure is performed in an operating room,
under local anaesthesia with or without sedation. Occasionally,
one or two additional injections are necessary to reach the
desired aesthetic result. Smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol
can decrease the lifespan of injected fatty cells.
A fatty graft can also be the surgery
of choice for certain cases of reconstructive surgery, i.e.:
an injection of fat can partially correct a depression of the
skin following a physical trauma.
